Brassocattleya Amethyst
Elegant blossoms grace this intergeneric primary hybrid, from the cross between Brassavola cullculata and Cattleya purpurata. The sturdy foliage of this resilient plant is of a terete (succulent-like) texture and grows nicely compact.

With slender petals gracefully arching outward these flowers have a range of hues between cream-white and shell pink tints. This cross was fist done in the 1980s, but when we remade it we used an alba-white Cattleya purpurata, accentuating the contrast of the lip markings that come from that parent's lineage; like the seedling pictured above some have bright pink lips.

Brassocattleya Tidepool Treasure
The colorful blossoms of this intergeneric hybrid resemble little fireworks! Slender petals arch back around the prominent lip: lip color is white or magenta, and the colorful petals have bloomed either in pink hues, or yellow hues. The flowers are usually between 3 and 4 inches across, and the foliage stands up to 14 inches tall. The sturdy foliage has a terete (succulent-like) texture and compact growth habit. From the cross between Cattleya Latona and Brassavola cullculata.

Brassolaeliocattleya Adventurer 'Crothers'
A charming, very reliable blooming, compact, Cattleya hybrid. Flower count is only two per spike on young divisions, but you can expect six to seven on big plants. Its compact size and short rhizome makes are also pluses for specimen growing. It grows well outdoors with our Cymbidiums, but it should also do well indoors under bright, intermediate conditions. . Brassolaeliocattleya Bold Ruler 'Summer Magic'
Large, dark lavender-pink flowers with a burgundy-purple lip, and burgundy and yellow venation in the throat. The light fragrance is reminiscent of a rose scent. A very free-blooming 'classic corsage' style Cattleya>. A great Cymbidium companion plant.

Brassolaeliocattleya Cinco De Mayo
Flowers five and a half inches wide, of clear lavender-pink, are displayed on this hybrid between Laelia anceps and Brassocattleya Languedoc. When grown into a multi-lead plant, it makes an unusually short and compact specimen, for an anceps hybrid, on which the flowers dominate over the foliage. . Temperature Tolerant. Brassolaeliocattleya Mac Lambert
A fragrant and beautiful late Summer/early Fall bloomer, when not much else is blooming here! These shimmering, lavender-pink flowers have a bright yellow center and bloom in large clusters at the end of slender, arching stems. Excellent mounted on an appropriate tree in the garden. From the cross between Blc. Wake Island and Laelia autumnalis. Small, but well established plants in 8" slatted redwood baskets that should only get better with time. . Temperature Tolerant. Cattleya alaorii
This charming species is one of the more rare examples of the ultra-miniature Cattleya group referred to as "hadrolaelias". This petite species was first collected growing epiphytically in the coastal state of Bahia, Brazil. The foliage of the plants is small, approximately standing only four inches tall! The flowers open to form a distinctive cupped shape with the 'front' about one inch in diameter, and are a soft crystalline pink with a slightly darker pink lip. A delightful addition to a miniature collection, or as a companion plant to outdoor orchids! Previously classified as a Laelia.

Cattleya bicolor - green form
Eye-catching green-form parents were selected to produce these seedlings! Petals of the strong, green color, some clear-green and some with olive overtones, frame the bold pink lip of this Brazilian species. The long-lasting blooms have the signature, waxy, robust texture of their species. Some of the flowers even carry a sweet fragrance!

One of Brazil's extraordinarily resilient bifoilate Cattleyas, this species develops especially tall foliage that stands nearly three feet tall on some large specimens! Light loving and free-blooming!

Cattleya cinnabarina
Vibrant plumes of intense red-orange color are the highlight feature of this colorful Brazilian species. It is a rupiculous growing (rocky crevice-dwelling) orchid that is especially prized as a breeding-stock plant for its exquisite color.

The vibrant flowers have a boldly pointed star-shape, with flute-like lips, all blooming elegantly along a slender stem (up to 20 inches tall) high above the diminutive foliage (up to 6 inches tall). This compact growing plant thrives best outdoors with the Cymbidiums, and also does well indoors in the bright light conditions preferred by Cattleyas.

Cattleya Coastal Phenom
This handsome hybrid displays many of its' parents' best features, including rich colors, spicy fragrance, and temperature tolerance! From the cross between two fragrant and speckled species from the coastline of Brazil: the amber-green Cattleya schofieldiana, and Cattleya tigrina 'Gypsy King', a named variety with exceptional dark color and high flower-count.

These primary-hybrid seedlings sport flowers with a bright pink lip and have a range of handsome brown hues between olive, copper, fawn, and cocoa; petals will have a pattern of burgundy speckles and perhaps a rosy blush. The fragrance is strongly spicy with a sweet background.

These showy seedlings are from the cross between two eye-catching parents: Cattleya Mareeba Tiger and Cattleya schilleriana. The flower is an amber-green strongly overlaid by a rosy blush tint and a pattern of dark burgundy spots, and the showy lip is hot pink and bright white. Most should have some fragrance, as both parents are fragrant.

Cattleya Grande Dame
The colors of this excellent hybrid range between fuchsia hues and smoky-pinks, topping it all off with high-contrast, showy lip patterns. This resilient, outdoor Cattleya is well suited by its lofty name, often producing two to three large blooms on its first flower spike!

From the cross between Cattleya purpurata and Cattleya Pacavia, making this plant 3/4 Cattleya purpurata, giving the flowers more intense color, and 1/4 Cattleya tenebrosa which increases the size and showiness of the lip.

A very showy, compact growing, splash-petaled blossom. The large and boldly colorful lip is displayed between the eye-catching splash-petal pattern of pink with a bright white stripe! Both parents, Cattleya Irene Finney and Cattleya Interglossa, and this plant grow well outdoors here in Santa Barbara, in our sheltered growing area which reaches freezing temperatures most Winters.

Cattleya intermedia var. suavissima
A compact growing form of this Brazilian species. Overall height when in bloom is only about 12 inches. Flower petals are white; the lip also white but with a broad patch of lavender across the median lobe. Plants offered might differ a little from the picture. Cattleya labiata fma. coerulea
These seedlings are that rare 'coerulea' blue** color-form of this beautiful Brazilian species. The shapely flowers have a delicate off-white hue of lavender-blue tint and a contrasting lip of amethyst-purple with yellow at the throat. Delicate Fragrance. Since the long cold wet Winters of 2023 and 2024, we have been growing these seedlings in our heated greenhouse, where they have been much happier. We expect it would also do well as a window-sill plant (twice as much light as a phal) and under lights (as long as lights are seasonally adjusted for day-length).

**Orchids of coerulea color-form are often called "blue", which confuses many orchid admirers, since most actually look purple, not blue. "Coerulea" orchids lack the genes responsible for red flower color, and their 'cooler' overall coloration makes them distinct. This genetic trait is even more rare than orchid albinism and typically produces blooms with some combination of white, purple, and green.

Cattleya Lemon Trifle
We have been very happy with the results of this miniature cross between Cattleya endsfelzii and Cattleya Little Sunset. The flowers bloom in hues of yellows, oranges and pinks, some with contrasting tints. These elegant, star-shaped flowers are displayed nicely in clusters aloft on slender stems. Growth habit is compact, like its rupiculous (growing in rocky fissures) parent Cattleya endsfelzii, with bulbs and leaves only 6 inches tall.

Cattleya Magnetic Mystery
These showy seedlings are from the cross between two colorful and spotted parents: Cattleyas Motte Spot and tigrina. The flower color ranges between amber and smoky-mauve overlaid by spots or speckles of burgundy, all with a showy lip of hot pink or magenta. Some have bloomed with fragrance, a quality inherited from the C. tigrina parent. Shown in the picture above are siblings that express the lovely color range possible in this cross.

Cattleya Mareeba Tiger
This beautifully fragrant primary hybrid is one of our late-Spring favorites. Its' flowers have rich rosy-brown hues and are patterned with burgundy spots, but the focal point is it's nearly neon fuchsia-pink lip!

From the cross between two outstanding Brazilian species, Cattleya tigrina and Cattleya schilleriana. For those of you who like to stay current with orchid nomenclature: this hybrid, Mareeba Tiger, used to be called Resplendens, but that is now officially considered a synonym.

Cattleya Mosaic Mischief
Peppy, patterned, and colorful flowers are the signature of these seedlings: from the cross between two colorful and spotted parents, Cattleya Gaudii and Cattleya Motte Spot. The flowers range from blush to pink and are covered over by spots of burgundy or berry hues. The showy particolored lip sports bright pink and white.

Bright light is essential to these light-loving blossoms for peak color expression, so be sure to grow and flower these in bright conditions. Flowers may open with pale coloration at first, but color up rapidly over a few days after opening.

Cattleya pumila 'SanBar Stunner'
A beautiful, award-quality cultivar of this showy Brazilian miniature species. On our large specimen-plant we have measured these flowers with a natural spread of 13.5 centimeters (over 5 inches) across, although on a small plant the natural spread is more like 10 centimeters (4 inches). The flower shape is very good, and the color is a deep lilac-pink with a bold, fuchsia-burgundy lip. Overall height height of foliage is approximately four inches. A good grower and consistently has grown into beautifully formed specimens when grown in slatted baskets.

An miniature species phenom and an Autumn-blooming favorite! Cattleya Quinquecolor
A cross between two compact growing Brazilian bifoliates: Cattleya forbesii and Cattleya aclandiae. Both of these species have a habit of producing multiple flowering-leads a year. All of these that have bloomed thus far share an amber-green base color with dark burgundy dots, and a white lip with yellow and magenta markings. The plant stands about ten inches tall. . Cattleya Summer Samba
An eye-catching beauty, this plant blooms in rose-tones over copper and fawn, and has a bold lip of fuchsia that deepens to scarlet-red in the throat. The distinctive smoky colors and showy lip are from its Cattleya tenebrosa parent, and a rich wine-hued color palette from its Cattleya Massangeana parent. For these seedlings we crossed our largest, darkest Cattleya Massangeana with our darkest and most prolific Cattleya tenebrosa.

Cattleya tenebrosa
Big flowers, sultry bronzed colors, and a bold two-tone lip: these are all the hallmarks of this singularly handsome, Brazilian species. This is an all-time favorite flower for Summer, with large blooms easily reaching 6 inches across, some even bigger. The foliage can stand 18 inches tall, and the large specimens in full bloom are real show-stoppers!

These seedlings are from crossing of select parents, and their bronzed colors range from smoky fawn-brown to bright copper, and on rare occasion even golden hues. It's the signature lip, however, that really 'steals the show': the rich, rosy-pink lip shifts dramatically to a crimson throat so dark it can appear nearly black on some flowers! A superb outdoor orchid!

A stunning Cattleya species from the Rio Grande De Sul province of Brazil. The dark brown flowers are speckled with burgundy flecks, and the lip is a brilliant hot-pink. Laelia anceps 'Mr Chrismans First Orchid'
Named in honor of Mr. Chrisman himself, the founder of our nursery the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, the plants offered here are divisions of the very same plant of the very first orchid he purchased in 1947 at Thrifty Drug Store in Beverly Hills! He had a lifetime interest in plants, and he was a forestry major at Oregon State. Although he worked as an insurance executive for his career it was ten years after that, as a retirement project, that he opened this nursery in Santa Barbara with Paul Gripp as his first employee.

As its origin affirms this is a very easy growing orchid variety with jaunty star-shaped flowers, three to four inches across, displaying the soft purple-pink color and bold lip that are classic to this species. This variety is also remarkably compact for a Laelia anceps, with the overall height when in bloom at just about 24 inches tall.
The wet Winters of 2023 and 2024 proved that this species must be protected from Winter dampness as even the tree-mounted mother plant struggled to dry out because of the increased shade caused by nearby trees over time. Our potted and mounted divisions are now guarded from the seasonal rains where the direct Winter sun can dry them quickly when the rain is over.

A beautifully shaped Laelia anceps from the 'Pink Perfection strain' breeding line. Flower petal color is clear soft pink, darker along the midline of the petals; the lip is a creamy white with purple and more pink on the edge, and the throat is yellow with red lines. When awarded by the American Orchid Society, the flower had a natural spread of 9.8 cm and a petal width of 4.5 cm.

Laelia Splendid King 'Ice Castle'
A wonderful, stand-out flower from the cross between Laelia Splendid Spire and Laelia anceps 'SanBar Marble King'. This variety stands out because it inherited the white petal color and the robust flower and plant texture of its Laelia anceps parent, instead of the lavender color most of its siblings show from the Laelia Splendid Spire parent. This bold, cream-white flower has a colorful lip: large yellow and purple markings and burgundy stripes in the throat.
This cross was awarded an Award of Quality and has produced six, quality, award winning cultivars thus far.

Laelia Splendid Spire 'Crescendo'
A lovely, select variety of this large and robust primary-hybrid, from the cross between Laelia anceps and Laelia splendida species. Clusters of large star-like flowers, peach-pink overlaid with suffuse lavender, each with a bold lip of magenta and creamy yellow. The blossoms are held well above the large foliage on strong tall stems, overall, mature plants can stand up to 3 feet tall when in bloom.
This is a light-loving plant that produces its best flower color when grown and bloomed in bright conditions. Established, base blooming-size divisions from the original plant.

Laelia Splendid Spire 'Rose Queen'
Blooming in clusters on tall, slender stems the beautiful, rosy-tinted beige color and outstanding shape of these flowers sets them apart. The lip is a rich satin-pink, and the bright yellow and white throat has red stripes. A primary hybrid between Laelia splendida and Laelia anceps.

Laeliocattleya Bryan Wheeler 'Grandson', AM/AOS
Large, rosy-lavender flowers - up to six inches across! - with a dark burgundy-red lip and golden veins in the throat. The wide, ruffled petals each have a broad, slightly darker, magenta accent at the tip. Mature plants can have four flowers per spike. . Temperature Tolerant. April blooming.

A fantastic show! Despite the miniature foliage these lavender-pink flowers are up to four inches across, each with a deep pink lip and a yellow throat. Laeliocattleya Caligula
A primary hybrid between the Mexican species Laelia anceps and the Venezuelan species Cattleya perciviliana. As expected the form of both the plant and flower reflects a balance between the parents' traits: the flowers shape and substance resemble Laelia anceps while Cattleya perciviliana imparts fuller flowers and a shorter spike habit. . Laeliocattleya Lanai Nani
This spectacular hybrid gets bold color and pattern from both parents: Lc. Mari Song, with its' show-stopping splash-petal pattern, and the brilliantly colorful Lc. Dorothy Fiene. The main photo above gives an idea of the gorgeous range of floral displays, and all seem to share that colorful lip! A great feature of this beautiful hybrid is how well its' compact growth and shorter foliage showcase the large blossoms. So far, these first-bloom seedlings stand about 10 inches tall, although mature plants will likely stand a few inches taller.

Laeliocattleya Linda Bregante
These bold seedlings deliver large, luscious, colorful flowers, clearly the best of both parents: the huge and richly colorful Cattleya Okarchee 'Dark Thunder', and the robust and spectacularly splash-petaled Laeliocattleya Miss Wonderful 'Empire'.

These vibrant seedlings have flowers rich mauve to fuchsia hues, and most display that "splash" petal pattern that comes through so readily in the offspring of Miss Wonderful. Each blossom is about four to five inches across and are held either singly or in loose clusters well above the foliage. The resilience and robust growth of these plants make them excellent Cymbidium companions, reaching a height of about 20 inches tall when mature.

Laeliocattleya Orange Embers 'Santa Barbara'
This hybrid captures the best of both parents (Laelia Santa Barbara Sunset 'Showtime' x Cattleya aurantiaca). The sprays of bright orange are so exquisitely vibrant that they almost seem to glow from across the lath house! A wonderful companion plant to Laelia Santa Barbara Sunset because it extends your bloom season a little later.

Lyonara Over Easy 'Sun Kissed'
A vibrant, deep yellow lip accents the white, star-shaped flowers. The flowers bloom in clusters of two or three, and are held above the foliage on slender stems that can reach up to one foot long. From the cross between Schombocattleya Jamaica Plenty and Laelia anceps fma. alba. We find to be this an irregular bloomer, especially on small plants, but its unusual color combination and distinctive bulb shape makes it very popular at SBOE. . Temperature Tolerant. Rhyncholaelia digbyana
A famous species, with its lovely green petals and uniquely breathtaking white lip. A key feature of this species, distinctive to its exceptional beauty, is the highly unusual texture of the lip edge which is 'fimbriated' (possesses hair-like frills). It is said that if you measured along the lip, around every 'frill', the circumference would total between 20 and 30 feet!

Because it is pollinated by moths in nature the blossoms also produce a sweet fragrance at night. This flower is so admired by hybridizers that it is officially registered as a parent in 428 crosses! One reason for its popularity among is its' resilience : one of our customers didn't water his for 2 months and it was fine!
This exquisite orchid thrives and blooms best when grown in bright, indoor conditions, but can be grown with some success outdoors in Cymbidium conditions as long as it protected from winter rains. Plants offered here are seedlings 1-2 years from bloooming.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Maris Song x Bryce Canyon)
Bright colors and patterns to bloom for the Autumn! Two of our favorite outdoor-growing hybrids of the Cattleya alliance are the parents of these vibrant seedlings: the spectacularly splash-petal patterned Cattleya Mari Song, and the super colorful Rhyncholaeliocattleya Bryce Canyon.

The main photo above shows the parents and gives an idea of the gorgeous range of floral displays; the photo to the side, showing the compact foliage, is one of the seedlings in bloom. That compact foliage is a great feature of this beautiful hybrid as it really showcases the large blossoms. All the seedlings to bloom thus far have been bright hues of pink with delicate splash-petal patterns and lips with golden-yellow centers.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Kihei Sunset
Showy flowers with sunset hues ranging between yellows, pinks, and oranges; with accent markings of soft pinks and yellows to brilliant golds and magentas. The flowers tend to bloom at about four inches across, some with ruffled edges, and often blossoming in pairs or clustered. The siblings pictured above display some sense of the vibrant range of colors and markings present in this hybrid. From the cross between two colorful hybrids, Rhyncattleanthe Momilani Rainbow 'The Gypsy' and Rhyncholaeliocattleya Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon'.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Opal Appaloosa
This exciting hybrid showcases colorful blooms with bold, burgundy dots. The spotted pattern is from its lineage of Brazilian bifoliate Cattleyas, which are very resilient outdoor growers with bright colors and prominent speckles. The boldly speckled parents are the compact and spectacularly spotted Cattleya Motte Spot and Rhyncolaeliocattleya Long Life Spot, which adds fuller shape, amber hues, and a higher flower count.

This hybrid's burgundy dots are offset by a vibrant background color; this color ranges in the seedlings between pastel jade-green to rich amber-yellow (examples photographed above). The vivid colors require bright growing conditions: the coloration matures a few days after the flowers open. The large lip is predominantly vibrant fuchsia-pink. Some even bloom with fragrance!

Rhyncholaeliocattleya San Salvador
These large, lush blossoms are a subtle green color with petals tipped by rosy-pink. The showy rosy-pink lip has a bright yellow-green center; and the modestly fimbriated (hair-like) edge of the lip recalls the Rhyncolaelia digbyana heritage of this lovely cross, which we consider to be one of our best. These seedlings are from our cross between Cattleya granulosa and Rhyncolaeliacattleya Wilderness Magic. Many thus far have been fragrant! Small established plants 1-3 years from blooming. Avoid cold Winter rains and bring inside in Winter if it looks cold stressed. . Temperature Tolerant. June blooming.
