Brassocattleya Amethyst
Brassocattleya Amethyst
Elegant blossoms grace this intergeneric primary hybrid, from the cross between Brassavola cullculata and Cattleya purpurata. The sturdy foliage of this resilient plant is of a terete (succulent-like) texture and grows nicely compact.

With slender petals gracefully arching outward these flowers have a range of hues between cream-white and shell pink tints. This cross was fist done in the 1980s, but when we remade it we used an alba-white Cattleya purpurata, accentuating the contrast of the lip markings that come from that parent's lineage; like the seedling pictured above some have bright pink lips.

Established blooming-size seedlings. Seedlings are the offspring of pollination; as siblings they may be similar, yet each seedling is unique and no two seedlings are identical in precise color or shape. There is no way to tell ahead of time exactly which colors and display each seedling will favor. Enjoy the surprise!

Cattleya labiata fma. coerulea
Cattleya labiata fma. coerulea
These seedlings are that rare 'coerulea' blue** color-form of this beautiful Brazilian species. The shapely flowers have a delicate off-white hue of lavender-blue tint and a contrasting lip of amethyst-purple with yellow at the throat. Delicate Fragrance. We grow and bloom this species outdoors, but it also does well in brightly lit indoor conditions.

**Orchids of coerulea color-form are often called "blue", which confuses many orchid admirers, since most actually look purple, not blue. "Coerulea" orchids lack the genes responsible for red flower color, and their 'cooler' overall coloration makes them distinct. This genetic trait is even more rare than orchid albinism and typically produces blooms with some combination of white, purple, and green.

Inflorescences six feet tall? Flower clusters the size of soccer balls? ? Its true: the progeny from this cross between the tough outdoor-growing Laelia superbiens and the delicate intermdiate-growing Laelia lyonsii possess these amazing characteristics! Individually the flowers are also quite interesting at four inches across, gently undulating, and of typically light purple-pink color marked by burgundy tessellation and fine speckles.

Please Note: the size and height and color of these light-loving plants can vary depending on growing conditions and the maturity of the plant.

Established blooming-size divisions from our collection of mother plants of this cross. Our plants came from De Rosa Orchids in Natick, MA. In 1996 De Rosa and the grex received an Award of Quality from the American Orchid Society by De Rosa displaying twelve magnificent plants in bloom. The cross was made and registered by Walter Hunnewell of Wellesley, MA. Previously we considered this plant to be safely temperature tolerant, but after the the cold wet winters of 2023 and 2024, we recommend keeping it out of winter rains and if plant shows cold stress, then moving it into the garage or even inside the house.

Laeliocattleya Lanai Nani
Laeliocattleya Lanai Nani
This spectacular hybrid gets bold color and pattern from both parents: Lc. Mari Song, with its' show-stopping splash-petal pattern, and the brilliantly colorful Lc. Dorothy Fiene. The main photo above gives an idea of the gorgeous range of floral displays, and all seem to share that colorful lip! A great feature of this beautiful hybrid is how well its' compact growth and shorter foliage showcase the large blossoms. So far, these first-bloom seedlings stand about 10 inches tall, although mature plants will likely stand a few inches taller.

Established blooming-size seedlings. 'Seedlings' are the offspring of pollination; as siblings they may have similarities, yet each seedling is unique and no two are identical in exact color or shape. There is no way to tell ahead of time exactly which display each seedling will favor. Enjoy the surprise!

These bold seedlings deliver large, luscious, colorful flowers, clearly the best of both parents: the huge and richly colorful Cattleya Okarchee 'Dark Thunder', and the robust and spectacularly splash-petaled Laeliocattleya Miss Wonderful 'Empire'.

These vibrant seedlings have flowers rich mauve to fuchsia hues, and most display that "splash" petal pattern that comes through so readily in the offspring of Miss Wonderful. Each blossom is about four to five inches across and are held either singly or in loose clusters well above the foliage. The resilience and robust growth of these plants make them excellent Cymbidium companions, reaching a height of about 20 inches tall when mature.

Established blooming-size seedlings. Seedlings are the offspring of pollination, and some may be similar, yet each seedling is unique and no two seedlings are identical. Enjoy the surprise!
