The Book of Orchids: A Life-Size Guide to Six Hundred
Species from around the World
By Mark Chase, Maarten Christenhusz, and Tom Mirenda. 2017.
Hardcover book with 656 pages.
Beginning with Tom Mirenda’s sublime preface, the first 24 pages provide a clear overview of the orchid family. Then follow the 600 entries of single-page “bot”-ographies with actual-size photographs and geographic distribution. Particulars to each species are included, varying between details on cultivation, to ethnobotany, fragrance, pollinators, and scientific importance are mentioned where applicable.
The decision to organize the orchids taxonomically, and the authors’ inclusion of many non-cultivated orchids, provide an unparalleled illustration of the floral and geographic diversity that resulted from the orchids' evolution and adaptation. Instead of the standard “alphabetical by genus” format, this taxonomical approach groups first by ancientness of subfamily and then alphabetically by by tribe, subtribe, and genus.
We are so honored that Tom Mirenda, who has also been a frequent contributor to the American Orchid Society magazine, participated as the Guest Author for this book at our 2017 SBOE Summer Open House!
