The Book of Orchids: A Life-Size Guide to Six Hundred Species from around the World
By Mark Chase, Maarten Christenhusz, and Tom Mirenda. 2017. Beginning with Tom Mirenda’s sublime preface, the first 24 pages provide a clear overview of the orchid family. Then follow 600 single-page “bot”-ographies with actual-size photographs and geographic distribution. Particular to each species, details on cultivation, ethnobotany, fragrance, pollinators, and scientific importance may be included. The grouping of the plants is not the standard “alphabetical by genus”, but more taxonomical: first by ancientness of subfamily and then alphabetical by tribe, subtribe, and genus. This grouping and the authors’ inclusion of many non-cultivated orchids provide an unparalleled illustration of the floral and geographic diversity resulting from orchid evolution and adaptation. Hardcover book with 656 pages.
