By Johan and Clare Hermans, David Du Puy, Phillip Cribb and Jean Bosser. Just revised 2nd edition of a checklist and bibliography of the almost 1000 orchid species from that very special island in the Indian Ocean. The 398-page book contains information critical to anyone trying to grow orchids from this region.
The book is divided into several parts. The main part is a 250-page checklist that lists: plant names, distribution, habitat, altitude, flowering time, life form (epiphytic/lithophytic,
), notes, and references. The bibliography contains 1500 entries, the most critical of which are annotated. The more than 250 photos are mostly devoted to close-up flower shots, although a few show the magical scenery of Madagascar. There are also botanical line drawings of new species, a list of disputed species, and a list of synonyms.
Due to the specialized nature of this book, SBOE only has a display copy on hand and only a very few will be for sale at the Fair. Pre-orders, however, will be accepted until Monday June 23, 2008. Pre-ordered books will be available for pick-up at the Orchid Fair, where co-author David Du Puy will be guest author, or will be signed by Du Puy and then shipped after the Fair. David lived in Madagascar for several years.
